Can this common herb promote hair growth?

August 17, 2023 – If you would like to grow your hair, you might have an answer in your kitchen cupboard – if TikTok and a few dermatologists are right.

Rosemary oil is nice for hair growth in individuals with androgenetic alopecia, a typical type of hair loss. According to an article in Insider.

A study from 2015 published within the journal SkinMed found that rosemary oil was similarly effective as minoxidil (also often called Rogaine) in promoting hair growth in men with androgenetic alopecia. The scalp also became less itchy after three to 6 months of use.

The small study included only men.

However, dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal, MD Cleveland Clinic that it seems to work.

“The study really got people looking into rosemary oil for hair growth,” she said. “After that, it was much more common in over-the-counter products as well.”

The Cleveland Clinic also reports that rosemary oil may help against dandruff and premature graying of hair.

Khetarpal recommends massaging rosemary oil into the scalp, leaving it overnight, after which washing it out. Try to do that two or thrice per week.

She also points out that only just a few drops of rosemary oil are needed and that the main focus needs to be on the scalp somewhat than the hair, which can look greasy resulting from rosemary oil.

It could take six months for a “significant improvement” to occur, Khetarpal said.

TikTok users at the moment are enthusiastically praising the oil's hair-care properties. Videos with the hashtag #rosemaryoil have already been viewed over 2 billion times on the social media platform.
