Journal report: Fibromyalgia linked to higher risk of death

July 12, 2023 – People who are suffering from chronic pain and fatigue on account of fibromyalgia can have the next risk of death, a brand new evaluation of evidence shows.

The disease could make people vulnerable to accidents, infections and even suicide, in keeping with the RMD open.

The researchers suggest that caregivers monitor physical and mental health to scale back the risks.

People with fibromyalgia often produce other health problems, including rheumatic, intestinal, neurological and mental illnesses, in keeping with BMJthe peer-reviewed medical journal. More and more persons are being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The reason for the disease remains to be unclear.

The researchers examined eight studies published between 1999 and 2020 and summarized the outcomes of six of them. A complete of 188,000 adults took part within the studies.

Analysis of the info found that fibromyalgia is related to a 27% increased risk of death from all causes.

Fibromyalgia patients had a 44 percent higher risk of infection, including pneumonia, and their risk of suicide was greater than thrice higher.

The higher overall risk of death might be on account of fatigue, lack of sleep and concentration problems, in keeping with the BMJ.

The patients had a 12 percent lower risk of dying from cancer, the evaluation found. This could also be because they visit healthcare professionals more often, the authors suggest.

“Fibromyalgia is often referred to as an 'imaginary illness' and there is debate about the legitimacy and clinical usefulness of this diagnosis. Our study provides further evidence that fibromyalgia patients should be taken seriously, with particular emphasis on screening for suicidal thoughts, accident prevention, and prevention and treatment of infections,” the researchers say.
